The New York Chapter of National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) has been in existence since 2009 -- first as the Chautauqua Chapter, and in 2018 as the New York Chapter, based in New York City. We are a program of the national organization of National Society of Arts and Letters which was chartered in 1945. NSAL has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in awards and scholarships to exceptionally talented young artists in the performing and fine arts.

NSAL holds multiple competitions each year. Chapter-level finalists who proceed to the national-level competitions are consistently awarded scholarships and prizes. Many of our chapter and national finalists have gone on to success in prestigious institutions, such as the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the Metropolitan Opera Symphony Orchestra, International Ballet companies, Off-Broadway, Broadway, and Film.

Our most substantial prizes each year are awarded in four disciplines that rotate over four years: Dance, Instrumental Music, Drama, and Musical Theater. (Age ranges differ depending on the discipline).

Finalist in the Florida East Coast chapter's 2006 competition, who went on to an award in the national competition.

  • The Dorothy Lincoln Smith competition is open to exceptional classical singers (ages 23-31).

  • The Shirley Rabb Winston Scholarships Competition is open to  classical singers (16-22).

  • The Naomi Rabb Winston Scholarship Competition is offered to fine artists (ages 16-23)

Members have the satisfaction of identifying and providing critical support to stellar talent at the beginning of their careers.
